anapest
- Definition:
Sometimes also called anapaest. One of the six metrical feet of Classical
poetry,
having two short or unstressed syllables followed by one long or stressed
syllable. It corresponds to the fourth of the medieval
rhythmic
modes, but the three beats are of different length, being in
the proportions 1-to-2-to-3, rather than 1-to-1-to-2.
