gestural rhythm
- Definition:
Rhythm conceived as a flow of intensities to and from points
of emphasis. Unlike
attack-point rhythm, gestural rhythm considers not only the temporal
distance between events, but the flow of musical energy that arises between them. Two
passages with the same ordered series of durations do not
necessarily share the same gestural rhythm since their
primary points of accent can occur at different points
within the series. See also Graybill (1990), gesture.
